“Create a freehand drawing to explain to a high school senior how to identify which of two compounds has the higher boiling point. There are three pairs of drawings to complete. In your drawing, strive for clarity in visually representing the concepts of bond type and strength. Label all operative bonding.”

This assignment (which is divided into three sections) generated almost 1,800 student drawings. The following examples highlight the different ways in which students chose to visually explain the scientific concepts.
